Light House Canvas - DIY Home Decor with Creative Embellishments

 

Welcome to the ocean. The ocean is my happy place and I adore creating a variety of coastal projects to keep me as close as I can be to my favorite place.  

Creative Embellishments has a large selection coastal themed products to help with card making, home decor, traditional memory keeping,  scrapbooking, and any crafty idea you can imagine.

Today's feature is an easy  DIY home deco canvas made using Creative Embellishments Wooden Home Decor - Lighthouse and embellished with Creative Embellishments Seagull Set and Starfish and Sand Dollars

The wood wooden Home Decor - Lighthouse  piece is fairly large (4.2" wide and 12" tall ) so I selected an 8"x 10" canvas for the project.  The paper background is a sheet of patterned paper from Stamperia's Sea Land 12x12 collection. It's also the backing behind the wood light house.  

I think I am on my 4th reorder of this gorgeous collection.  

I used a sea sponge and dabbed the wood light house with white  and light blue acrylic paint - but did not cover the whole piece. I tried to achieve a weathered look - not full coverage.    Tip:  if you find you have "over painted", just take some sand paper to the wood and ruff it up a bit.  You'll get it back to sea worthy perfection in no time.

Sun Sand Surf - Nautical Themed Wall Decor Using Chipboard

Today I'm sharing my take on the August Challenge at Creative Embellishments.  Yes August already but while the summer is flying by, the start of a new month brings the start of a new challenge at Creative Embellishments.  

I created a wall hanging/door hanging leading the way to the peaceful respite of sun, sand and surf. My chipboard pieces are: Creative Embellishments - Beach Word Set 1, Creative Embellishments - Starfish And Sand Dollars, Creative Embellishments - Lighthouse Set Of 4.  

The special twist this month is to add a scalloped pattern.  My scalloping was created using a stencil and molding paste.  

The image below shows the chipboard pieces featured on this project.  Each piece of chipboard was gently dabbed with white acrylic paint on a sea sponge - keeping treatments super simple.  For this project, less is best.

A little about the stencil used

The stencil is from The Crafter's Workshop - 6 x 6  Wave combined with The Crafters Workshop Light and Fluffy Modeling Paste.  It's a beautiful stencil and I think I'll be enjoying it for a long time.  

I added a very inconsistent mixture of white and light blue acrylic paint to the modeling paste for a frothy feel.  I also added white highlights to the stenciling after it was dry to make some of the ocean froth be more.....well.....frothier.

I love the beach.   It's a peaceful place for me and a theme I use in my crafting quite often. 

Creative Embellishments has the most wonderful chipboard designs for beach and sea related projects. 

I bought an inexpensive wooden shadow box and thought I would alter it and make my own personal beach.    I have a "before" image below. 

I grabbed a few of my favorite pieces from Creative Embellishments beach  designs and lightly dabbed them with acrylic paint.

This piece of home decor has a bit of a twist because  I turned it into a shaker to hold sequin shaker mix, but to also hold some of the tiny shells found on the Caribbean Islands from a recent cruise vacation. 

The shaker mix is from 28 Lilac Lane /Buttons Galore and More's sequins and Beads collection.

This is Aqua Dreams LL690 

The outside edge of the box was covered with some rope to hide the edges of the  acrylic shaker window.  Sometimes you have to get crafty to hide the rough edges.

Spellbinders APG-Amazing Paper Grace Die of the Month - Spellbinders monthly die club, features the gorgeous graceful dies designed by Becca Feeken.   Her die designs are well known for their delicate lace effect.  
I think  it also makes for a cool seaside wave effect.  So that is the direction I went.

Here is the image of the APG die set for the Month of May. It's a nested set to provide a variety of design options.  
I used the largest intricately designed die as a background mat and the smaller inside dies as the card.  

These dies are only available through the club and are limited to the month of May, so hurry before they are sold out.

Spellbinders and Fun Stampers Journey have some wonderful coordinating stamp and die sets for embellishing.  The matching stamps look fabulous with layered inks.   

My ink choices are shown below.  I layered the stamps with different ink colors starting with the lightest color to the darkest - in an effort to keep the ink pads from getting muddied.  

 Keep in mind - if you want a clean clear crisp stamped image, you need quality inks.  You can't go wrong with some basic quality staples - like a rich brown and black ink.  Distress inks do not provide crisp stamped images.

The smallest embellishments on a card can make a giant impact.  Let's take the little acrylic stars used on the card from Buttons Galore and More.  They provide a bit of texture and interest on the face of the card - along with a bit of iridescence in real life.
