Patriotic USA Wood Home Decor ( Shaker Art)

Freedom isn't Free.  I am thankful for the brave patriots (past and present) working to keep America free.

Creative Embellishments has some amazing products with patriotic themed designs to celebrate all things patriotic, from shakers to stamps, home decor, chipboard and stencils. My project today features the wood home decor USA shape, flag shaker and some chipboard shapes to accent the piece.

Today  I am featuring a home decor piece celebrating freedom using:   United States - Wood Home Decor

In addition to the wood home decor piece, here are the chipboard accent pieces used:

This decor piece is going on my front door.  To protect the unfinished wood piece from sun fading,  I sprayed the piece with a coat of clear shellac to seal the wood.  As you can see, the wood Creative Embellishments uses is clean and unblemished, ready to use.

The sentiment, Freedom Isn't Free,  and the Creative Embellishments chipboard  Star Pieces were also kept simple and painted with vanilla acrylic paint.

Let's Talk About the Shaker

The flag is a classic iconic design for any patriotic crafty project but a  Flag Shaker  brings this to a whole new level of crazy decor fun (for me at least - smiling at my craft table because I enjoy the process.)

The shaker pieces were painted using acrylic paints. The shaker was filled with fun shaker mix from Buttons Galore called DooDadz.  Great shaker mix makes the shaker all the more fabulous.  I like adding shakers to home decor projects because they add a unique, interactive element that is not typical of wall art.

Here is the mix used today:   Buttons Galore - Doo Dadz - Yankee Doodle DD110

The eggs in the basket were plastic mini eggs I had in my stash forever and cut in half.

The shaker mix on this sweet bunny is from Buttons Galore's Sprinkletz collection.  By the name, you probably guessed it - the polymer clay embellishments look like tiny candies and sprinkles.
This particular mix is Cupcake Sprinkletz

Love - DIY Shaker Home Decor Wall Hanging

DIY Valentines Day Shaker Wall Hanging

I'm getting ready for Valentines Day by making a DIY shaker home decor piece to hang on my wall.  To be truthful, I was going to gift this to my friend, but I can't part with it.  Is that bad?  Don't judge me...haaaaaaaa.  We all fall in love with some pieces and can't part with them.

I actually bought a  Hanging wood wall decor piece from Hobby Lobby that said, "You are so loved".  Half price too!  Can't beat that.

The sign started off good but I knew I could make it better by gussying with chipboard from Creative Embellishments  and cheery shaker mix Buttons Galore and More.

I combined the "Love Makes the World Go Round" chipboard  wreath and veneer Conversation Hearts from Creative Embellishments to decorate my piece.  The wreath with cream acrylic paint and topped with Crackle Accents - Crackle Medium.

Every fun shaker needs cool fabulous shaker mix.  I used mix from Buttons Galore and More to bedazzle my wall hanging.

If you are like me, I have forever been frustrated using beads and even sequins on my work.  Pike it up and the beads and sequins flake off to the floor top sweep up.  Very discouraging.  Soon there are no little glass beads left on the project.

What's the best way to keep the little beads, sequins and buttons on a mixed media piece like this?  Where ever I wanted embellishments, I slathered a generous amount of Prima - Finnabair - Heavy Body Gel directly on the wood or chipboard.

Why this particular product?  It dries totally clear and NOT glossy.   And because it's super thick and the beads and sequins can relax into the gel a bit to hold...not sink and be covered.

I like to think the embellishments are being hugged  by the gel medium and gently encouraged to hang around to be enjoyed.

Want beads to stick? ....slather on the Heavy Body Gel .
Want to add a big bold button?  slather and glob
Need sequins to behave?  Yep slather and stick.

The big bold red button focal embellishment is also from Buttons Galore's Cookie Jar full of Fancy Gold Buttons  - a gorgeous, rich collection of various gold buttons; some have jewels, some look vintage, some are shiny, a wonderful surprise in the jar.

Cone Tree Shaker Centerpiece - DIY Tips and Techniques

Simple DIY Christmas Table Centerpiece Decor That Will Dazzle Your Guests

You've probably seen variations of the "cone tree".  It seems to be a popular item this season bedazzled with glitter, fabric, ribbons and garland.

Cone trees come in all sizes.  Mine happen to be mini.  I've combined DIY cone trees with shaker stands to create a captivating table centerpiece. The staggered display allowed me to add a shaker feature to each tree for added glitz and fun.

Scroll on down the page and I'll share how easy these are to make and decorate using shaker mixes, 3D buttons and sequins  from Buttons Galore/ 28 Lilac Lane and chipboard from Creative Establishments.

Simple to make:

The hardest part is deciding how to cover each cone.  All the holiday fabrics are on sale now, so these make GREAT options.

I covered mine with ribbon, yarn, and ripped fabric.  Yep I took advantage of the fabric sales, bought a 1/4 yd and ripped it into strips.  The ripping creates frayed edges which I LOVE.
The Cones
I found mini cones from Hobby Lobby,  however you can make cones from thin cardboard if you want.

TIP:  Need cones and don't want to make your own?  How about using party hats?

Grab some inexpensive party hats from any dollar store and cut to size or leave "as is" for larger decorative trees.  If you want thinner trees, then unstable and adjust until satisfied.  Super easy for crafting on the cheap.

Save one to use as a template for later use.

I added mini grapevine wreaths to the bottom of each cone.  While decorative, it was a great way to hide what's going on under the cone. The cones will be on glass shaker bases so I added a cardboard bottom to each cone.
The cone trees will be staggered and will need a variety of clear containers for the shaker bases.  The Dollar Tree (and any other dollar store) has great options.  I grabbed some votive candle stick holders from the dollar store that already came in different heights.  I found shot glasses and a plastic bottle with a lid  -  saved from a product I finished.

The round white wood charger plate was on clearance due to a crack in the wood.  That's why I bought the piece - the crack.  It was magnificent and cheap - a happy combination.

The shaker mixes
The shaker mixes, 3D buttons and sequins used are from Buttons Galore/ 28 Lilac Lane.  I used three different selections for variety.  I like using the mixes with buttons when I am filling a bigger space (such as the shot glasses.)

Creating lids or stoppers for the shakers
The next step is to create stoppers or lids for the glass bases.  Mine were made quite easily using cardboard circles cut to size.

Finishing Touches- 3D Buttons and chipboard embellishments
Each cone tree has unique finishing touches using 3D buttons from Buttons Galore  and/or chipboard from Creative Establishments tying the project together to look unified and complete.

The red berries were coated in Ranger Glossy Accents  to make them pop.

Another shout out to Buttons Galore /28 Lilac Lane for the gorgeous vibrant red Dragon Fire Embellishment Bottle mix, with it's fabulous combination of buttons, beads, and sequins.
I used the button mix like garnish on a dinner plate, sprinkled all about.
