Escape Kitty's Happy Place - with Flying Unicorns

This is the Flying Unicorns kit for the month of July.  It came packed with the beautiful new paper and flower collection from 49th and Market as well as some cool natural embellishment elements.

The kit also came with beautiful gold accents and I decided to add purple to the mix - a great companion for the gold.   I also tossed Miss Escape Kitty in as well.  She's hard to keep out of my craft area.  In fact she does a nice job of pawing through the kit before I do.
Plus she's never met a basket she didn't love and didn't try to stuff herself in to.
Show of hands....raise your hand if your cat does that too?  Boxes, baskets, lids of boxes - just so odd.  Escape Kitty will even stuff her tiny little body to fit into a tiny clementine orange crate.  Those are small.

The butterflies were cut from the  Vintage Artistry collection - Flora and Fauna  12x12 sheet in the kit.  I topped them with some gold trim  from my stash ( Prima Frank Garcia Memory hardware -Cours Mirabeau floral Lace Gold trim).

In the photo below, I did add my own trims and purple flower from my stash for more purple accents.

The flowers are from 49th and Market as well and came in the kit.  I inked a few flowers with Distress ink in Seedless Preserves, and topped one with the gold trim from Prima Frank Garcia Memory Hardware.

Special thanks to Escape Kitty for helping out this month at the Flying Unicorns.

Christmas Carol Lantern- Home Decor with the Flying Unicorns

Flying Unicorns Off the Page Home Decor for July with "A Christmas Carol"

The OTP (Off the Page )altered project for July was really cool - a bit unusual and fascinating.  I looked at it and it brought images of the "Christmas Carol" to my mind so I had my sweet little Julie Nutting dolls help me create my mini carolling scene.

This piece is available in my ETSY shop while it lasts.  You can see it here.    I also have 30% off all items in my ETSY shop through Labor Day - Sept 4th.  Use code "KITTY30" at checkout.

The metal lantern is from Darice and stands only  3.5 x 3.5 x 7.5 inches so I had to use the smaller children doll stamps by Julie Nutting.  I chose Toby and the little girl.

I wanted the little girl to have a long Victorian styled dress so I made extra ruffles for her skirt and gave her a cape wrap instead of a shirt.  If you scroll down the page, I'll show you how to adapt your Nutting doll stamps to work well with an "off the page" project and yet be durable.

Papers and flowers are from the Prima Victorian Christmas collection by Frank Garcia.

How did I make the dolls?
Julie Nutting's doll stamps are meant to be used in a variety of ways and not for just tags.  Sure tags are fun, but then so is any project you make with the little darlins.

The real trick to using them on "Off the Page " projects is to make them as durable as possible so they do not bend.    This is how I accomplish that:

Step 1.  I stamp the doll shape twice and cut both out.  One shape will be for the front and the second for the back. This is the "Toby" doll stamp.
Step 2.  Go ahead and decorate the front of your doll as you desire.  Leave the second blank for now.
Step 3.  Once the front of the doll is done, ink all the edges of the second doll - both front and back.   This is in preparation for making a doll "sandwich".  When I glue the two dolls together, I do not see any white edges.  The project blends nicely.
Step 4.  After the edges of the second doll are inked, it's time to give the doll some "legs" to stand on.

I love wood barbeque skewers.  They are inexpensive and I use them almost every time I craft.  Today they are going to become the "backbone" of my dolls.  haaaaaaa.  Little wood doll stamp humor.    Cut the skewers to fit head to toe and glue to the doll.

Yes you do want to have the stamped side facing up.  This is the side you want to use when adding the wood skewers.

Step 5.   After the skewers are in place, you can go ahead and glue the sandwich together.  You may need to hold the edges together as they dry.  Once dry, you can continue to dress the back of the dolls. I just stamp the clothes and flip them around to use the backside if I do not want a lot of clothing detail.

Here are the rest of the close ups of the finished lantern and "Christmas Carol " scene.

Here are more close ups of the lantern and the whole piece.

I added Prima's snowflake paste to the lantern and embellishments after I was done to give that snowy winter feel.  It's also topped with a bunch of Prima products from the Victorian Christmas collection by Frank Garcia.

July Flying Unicorns - Butterfly Mixed Media Piece

Flying Unicorns July Release

The July kit from the Flying Unicorns was quite a beautiful treat filled with natural elements and an earthy feel.   The featured collection is 49 and Market.  The papers are beautifully subtle so I kept this piece in all neutrals.

This piece is available in my ETSY shop.  You can see it right here.  I am also having a 30% off sale through Labor Day (Sept4th). Anything you select will be 30% off.  Use code "KITTY30" at checkout.

My finished project really did not venture too far from the original inspirational sheet of 12x12 from 49th and Market.  I looked at the soft graphic on the sheet and decided to use that framework.  This sheet is called Botanical Press and you can see that my project pretty much uses the graphics on the page as the design.

I cut the butterflies or moths from the Flora and Fauna Cutout sheet and layered them over  kraft paper and some woven mesh I had in my stash.

In the image below, you can see the mesh type material I used.  It cam from the floral department and is like a natural straw type weave.

I accented the piece with buttons, string and the flowers from 49th and Market that cam in the July kit.
The chipboard word, Believe, came from Creative Embellishments in a prior Unicorn kit and I left basically unfinished  with exception to the few splatters of gold paint on the word.

You can see a giant assortment of chipboard at the Flying Unicorn.  Creative Embellishments are located here.  Many other varieties of chipboard are located here.

Now for the bottom corner of the page...the kit came with a cool little piece of driftwood that I broke in half and incorporated onto the page as my natural element.

Celebrate July 4th with Julie Nutting and Photo Play

Celebrate July 4th with Julie Nutting and PhotoPlay Paper

I created a few cards using Photo Play's Nautical Bliss paper collection by Julie Nutting.  I created three different cards just to show how easy it is to change a few things on the cards and get a cute new look.  ( grab your Julie Nutting and Photo Play products on sale at the Flying Unicorns)

Card one started off as a flag theme card, which I really love.  My family gathers on July 4th for a cookout and to celebrate a few birthday's so this is perfect.   I gave it a vintage appeal using distress ink.

This card used the Nautical Bliss papers from Julie Nuttings collections by Photo Play, and the tiny alphas are stickers from the as well.  It's the sticker sheet called "Alpha Stickers.

Supplies:
PhotoPlay Paper -by Julie Nutting Paper Doll Collection sticker set PD2198
PhotoPlay Paper - Julie Nutting's Nautical Bliss 12x12 collection "floral" NB2241
PhotoPlay Paper - Julie Nutting's Nautical Bliss 12x12 collection "Boats" NB2242
PhotoPlay - Julie Nutting's Nautical Bliss 12x12 collection "Elements Stickers" NB2244
Raffia
Distress Ink  - Vintage Photo and Walnut Stain
Blue star ribbon from my stash

Card two is the same basic card, yet I added a sweet die cut doll from the Paper Dolls Ephemera set.  These are fun because you can mix and match the clothing and dolls - and they are still small enough to fit on a card.  They are not quite as large as the doll stamps.

 Supplies:
PhotoPlay Paper -by Julie Nutting Paper Doll Collection sticker set PD2198
PhotoPlay Paper -by Julie Nutting Paper Doll Collection PD2198
PhotoPlay Paper - Julie Nutting's Nautical Bliss 12x12 collection "floral" NB2241
PhotoPlay Paper - Julie Nutting's Nautical Bliss 12x12 collection "Boats" NB2242
PhotoPlay - Julie Nutting's Paper Doll collection Ephemera Set  PD2201
Raffia
Red Gem

Card three uses the same basic products , but doesn't have a vintage look.  No distress ink - Just clean and simple and layered.

 Supplies:
PhotoPlay Paper - Julie Nutting's Nautical Bliss 12x12 collection "floral" NB2241
PhotoPlay Paper - Julie Nutting's Nautical Bliss 12x12 collection "Boats" NB2242
PhotoPlay - Julie Nutting's Nautical Bliss 12x12 collection "Elements Stickers" NB2244
Blue Star ribbon

See how easy it is to use the same products but make them look totally different with a few changes.  Thanks for stopping.

( PS. extra bonus....Flying Unicorns has all the Julie Nutting and Photo Play papers and products on sale!)
