Sunday Drive Through America - Cards Using Spellbinders Dies

Spellbinders has some new dies that are fun, festive and fabulous. 

Just how festive?  Let's take a look.  

I created a card to celebrate our upcoming Memorial Day holiday  

along with the strength and resilience of our beautiful country. 

These cards feature two new dies from Spellbinders;  Spellbinders Sunday Drive Dies and Spellbinders Kaleidoscope Strip Etched Dies.

This card also uses some other cool embellishing products, like Buttons Galore's - 3D Silver Stars Buttons and Buttons Galore - Stars Stripes shaker mix.  The sequins and stars from the shaker mix are prefect little finishing touches.

I want to showcase some tools I've fallen in love with when using die cuts and sequin/shaker mixes.  The following tools have made my crafty life a bit more enjoyable by helping control the small bits and pieces.  

Glue for small bits and pieces:  First - let me tell you I have searched high and low for glue that has a precision tip for use on the most delicate die cut pieces and smallest sequin embellishments. It's gotta dry crystal clear and have amazing holding power.  It cannot glob or be runny and warp the paper.  

Voila!  I bring you Nuvo - Deluxe Adhesive. Absolutely a game changer for me because I am in total control with no sticky residue, no stingy glue strings, and amazing gripping power.     

Pick-up Tools: This is another area where I frankly struggled.  I bought a few other pick-up tools and wasn't super thrilled until I tried the  Crystal Ninja CRYSTAL KATANA -Pick Up Tool.
The black tip is wax and helps grip the smallest piece to enable perfect controlled placement - with no black wax residue.  Sequins?  no problem.  Gems?  under control.  Ity bity die cut pieces?  a snap.

Magnetic Die Holder - Spellbinders Tool and Accessories Main Attraction is a "must have" when using small dies.  Raise your hand if you have literally lost a small die somewhere on your desk while in use.  Not sure how it even happens but it's real folks...just gone.

Unicorn Shaker Shadow Box Home Decor

Glittery Unicorn Shaker DIY Home Decor

Hello crafty friends. Today I'm sharing a glittery, sparkly, magical unicorn DIY shaker shadow box.  Adding glitter, sparkles and shakers to your projects is easier than you think. 

If you scroll down, I show how I made this unique unicorn home decor piece. 

The features shaker piece was created using Creative Embellishments  - Baby ATC Set.  The cool thing about these ATC's is that Creative Embellishments has made it super easy to transform them into fabulous shakers with the Coin Ring and Shaker Acrylic Pieces .

The inspiration for this DIY magical piece was the unicorn Christmas ornament snagged from the clearance section at Hobby Lobby.  I saw the ornament on clearance and and tossed it into my cart.  Actually I bought the last two.  I couldn't leave one unicorn all alone (especially for the eye popping clearance price).   

Next I saw a pink glittery picture frame also in clearance and tossed it in my cart.   

As I mentioned above, the moon and stars shaker was made using Creative Embellishments  - Baby ATC Set and the shaker adaptor rings - the Coin Ring and Shaker Acrylic Pieces .  For this particular piece, I wanted the shaker to be totally see-through so I used two acrylic windows for the shaker - no worries since six acrylic windows come in the adaptor set.  

 I think the transparent effect is charming and perfect for my magical themed project.  

The chipboard pieces were painted white, assembled and filled with shaker mix from Buttons Galore and More, then the edges finished with white tulle.   

The cute resin castle and coach embellishments are 3D buttons from Buttons Galore -  Happily Ever After , Fairy Tale Collection.  

The Glitz and Sparkle (Sequins and Shaker Mix)

The glittery sequin, button and bead mix is from Buttons Galore and More.  I used two different mixes for this project: 

1.   Midwinter Night Shaker Cube Mix ( used for the background)

2.  Unicorn Legend Shimmerz

*********************************************************************************This piece has been bedazzled for sure - exactly what I'd expect from a unicorn.  

The "Believe in Magic" words were printed on my computer and attached to the finished piece using gel medium.  

Here's how I created this piece:  

1. The back of the picture frame was removed and covered with Silver Glitter Paper .  I slathered a generous amount of 3D Matte Gel medium or  heavy body gel  to the glitter cardstock.  

I love this gel because it dries crystal clear, and acts like a super bonding glue to hold all those beads and sequins in place.  

2. I poured glittery  Midwinter Night Shaker Cube Mix mix from Buttons and Galore over the gel medium, making sure there was a thick covering and let air dry.  

If you use a heat gun to make the process quicker, it will bubble and my warp or discolor the glitter paper. 

3. After the back of the picture frame was removed, two eye hooks were screwed into the wooden frame - one near the head and one eye hook at the tail , enabling me to secure the unicorn in place with wire.   After the unicorn was set into place and wired securely, I could finish assembling the shadow box.   

 

It looks very complex when assembled but it was actually a simple piece to create and gussy up into something unique and  befitting a unicorn.

Decorating Spring and Easter Cards with Sequins

Spring and Easter Cards - DIY with Sequins

I'm here with a touch of Spring and Easter love.  I am showcasing some new Creative Embellishments chipboard designs to show you how easy it is to gussy chipboard with sequins.  

I've combined a few products together to create cards that also fit the April Challenge at Creative Embellishments.  Every month, CE releases a new challenge with great prizes.  This month, the challenge board is popping with Spring colors and excitement (and the twist this month is to add metal to your entries.)

The Chipboard Used

Today's chipboard pieces include the Creative Embellishments - Bunny Bottom Shaker  and Love Sentiment Hearts, with four sentiment hearts in the set.   Quite the value to spread over four projects if desired.

First up is the adorable Bunny Bottom Shaker set that is sure to make someone smile.  That little bunny bottom...oh so adorable and super easy to help you create a custom Easter or Spring card, or how about a baby card. 

The chipboard was painted with acrylic - super simple.  You may notice in the image below that the edges of the chipboard are also painted.  I don't always paint the edges but I wanted to keep the shaker looking softer.  

TIP : Paint the inside edges of the chipboard pieces BEFORE assembling.  Paint the outside edges AFTER the shaker is assembled.  This saves time and makes the shaker look more polished and finished.

Shaker mix helps create "the magic" of the shaker card but it can also be a beautiful embellishment adding texture and sparkle to projects. 

I used the beautiful Buttons Galore - Rose Garden Mix (Shaker Cube) to decorate the cards.  The easiest way to make sequins, beads and buttons stick to projects is to use  a thick layer of Heavy Body Gel.    I slather the gel onto the project and then top with shaker mix.  

The gel dries crystal clear, doesn't really warp your paper and projects and acts as a durable adhesive gluing your bling to your card.

Here is the shaker mix used on the bunny bottom shaker. This is Buttons Galore's - Fairy Sparkle Sequin Tin, with beautiful  delicate pink hearts and tiny iridescent stars.

Spring Heart Card

Here is the second card - more of a Spring card that will be sent to someone to show my love and support.  Created with Creative Embellishments -Love Sentiment Hearts chipboard kept untreated, except the lettering.  I used a gold sharpie to color the letters. Super simple. 

Once again, you can see the Rose Garden Mix  used as texture on the and the chipboard.  This was also applied using a thick layer of Heavy Body Gel. 

The finishing touch on this card is the gold heart Fancy Gold Heart Buttons from Buttons Galore .  This fulfills the challenge twist for April using something metallic on the projects.  

The  word inside the Love Sentiment Hearts chipboard piece was painted using an Extra Fine Gold Metallic Sharpie  - super simple and clean.
