Halloween DIY Witch Hat Decor - Buttons Galore

Halloween  Witch Hat Home Decor - Featuring Buttons Galore's Pearlz

I love creating holiday home decor to freshen up the house at Halloween.

My piece today is a wooden witches hat decor piece adorned with Half Pearlz and 3D button embellishments from Buttons Galore and More.

What are Half Pearlz?  They are a collection of coordinating iridescent flat backed pearls.  The flat back makes them easy to glue on projects. Buttons Galore has a wonderful assortment of colorful Half Pearlz for various occasions and seasons. You can find all the Half Pearlz here.

Today I am showcasing Buttons Galore and More - Pearlz - Wicked Fun HPZ214- richly colored oranges, purples, lavenders and iridescent black. Perfect for adding a touch of Halloween spirit to your projects.

After painting the hat with black acrylic paint, it looked a bit flat when it dried so I added texture with a  bubble stencil and gloss gel medium (Ranger Ink - Multi Medium - Gloss which dries glossy - and    The Crafter's Workshop - Random Bubbles stencil ).

The gel medium is a great adhesive gel also so I added the Buttons Galore Half Pearlz to the hat while the gel was still wet. It's a great permanent bonding medium. Glue woks fine as well, but the gel medium was easy and convenient.

The project has a few other dimensional elements from Buttons Galore.  In addition to the Half Pearlz, I have added some  3D Buttons from Button Value Pack - Halloween VP316 and the 3D Buttons - Bats.

The wood witch hat is from Foundations decor.

DIY Halloween Pumpkin Jack-o-lantern Home Decor - Buttons Galore

Halloween Pumpkin Home Decor - Featuring Buttons Galore's Pearlz

It's almost time to decorate the home with Halloween fun.  Why not create something new to freshen up your holiday collection?

My piece today is a wooden jack-o-lantern decor piece adorned with Half Pearlz and 3D button embellishments from Buttons Galore and More.

I painted the jack-o-lantern wood figure and twisted green wire to create vine tendrils.  After the paint is dry, I'll wrap the vines around the wood stem to secure in place.

The Buttons Galore Half Pearlz are super easy to glue to surfaces however when I'm creating home decor, I prefer to adhere embellishments with a clear matte gel medium like The Crafter's Workshop - Gel Medium - Matte .   It's easy to use and is a permanent bonding medium - unlike hot glue which loses it's bond over time.

Altered Salt Shakers -Scarecrow and Witch - Home Decor Shakers with Buttons Galore

Turn Old Salt and Pepper Shakers into Halloween Home Decor

Welcome to Part Two my three part blog mini-series on re-purposing old salt and pepper shakers and creating fun, fabulous home DIY home decor.

Part One is found here and features bats.

Tis the season to find some great discounts on Halloween and Christmas items - Dollar stores, thrift stores, big box craft stores and on-line stores (Michaels, Hobby Lobby, JoAnns) all need to move inventory so go hunt and see what treasures you can stash.

Here are some helpful tips for supplies
- I love the Dollar stores because they have some great seasonal items that you can rip apart for supplies without feeling bad.  Check it out for some of these treasures listed below:

  • Raffia for Scarecrow - Dollar Store. You may need to rip apart some floral decorations
  • Black Cheese Cloth -  Dollar Store.  Black Creep cheesecloth table cloths, rip the cheesecloth off a creepy decoration.
  • Burlap - Rolls of inexpensive colored burlap.
  • Styrofoam balls - they sell various sized foam balls
  • Salt Shakers - plastic and glass

Scarecrow Altered Salt Shaker
First up, the scarecrow. His head is a Styrofoam ball Idea-ology - Tim Holtz - Halloween - Mummy Cloth lightly inked and wrapped around it.

I can't really provide specifics on the Styrofoam and ornament balls to use for the heads. The head  size will be determined by the shaker you use.  Sorry.

The buttons, shaker mix and 3D bat button sticking out of the in the hat are from Buttons Galore and More.

The Hat
The witch and scarecrow share the same style hat, purchased from Hobby Lobby's seasonal isle. The hat has been transformed from witch to scarecrow with a small piece of Idea-ology - Tim Holtz - Halloween - Mummy Cloth  that I died orange.  It's been finished with some festive gingham and a button.

The Bat Button in the Hat
When I create home decor, I try to make the project as durable as possible so I tend to secure embellishments using wire.  I attached black wire to the bat and tucked it under the hat, which is why the bat is able to stick out of his hat.

The scarecrow's orange shirt is just a piece of orange burlap with black wire woven through it to create arms that can bend or stay outstretched as desired.  Super easy - no sewing needed.

If you look at the raffia "hands", you'll notice I tied the burlap with black wire to finish off the shirt at the hands - to also prevent  the burlap from fraying.
I attached the arms to the shaker using more black wire.

The  Jack -o- Lantern Witch

The jack-o-lantern witch has an orange ornament for a head.  I started out using a Styrofoam ball and saw a set of  Halloween ornaments on sale.  The glittery head  adds a nice touch - and since it was orange, it turned into a jack-o-lantern.

The black shape-able cape was super easy to create using black cheesecloth and weaving black wire along one edge.  I also used the black wire to attach the cape to the shaker.

The eyes and mouth are paper with black sequins for accent.
